Ancient Art Concrete Countertops
Austin, TX 78734

Concrete countertops are not just for the kitchen, here concrete counters were used to create a bathroom vanity top reminiscent of the apothecary style of the 1920s and 1930s. Ancient Art created the base for this countertop out of kitchen cabinets from Home Depot. Spindle legs were attached to the bottom to make the piece look like free standing furniture.

The countertop was cast in place with Buddy Rhodes bone white mix. It is 2" thick with a hard troweled finish. The end result is smooth like stone because hardly any aggregate was exposed. To complete the look, American Standard porcelain vessel sinks were installed, half above the counter and half below.

This concrete tub and plumbing pedestal were formed with melamine and 2x6 braces. The piece was invert poured and vibrated on site in the finished bathroom. A bag mix was used with additional white Portland and anchor cement added. The tub was wrapped for a two week cure.

After the two weeks were up, it was unwrapped, scrubbed, detailed and sealed using light coats of a penetrating seal under a surface seal. The biggest challenge was flipping the tub because of its weight, 2500 lbs. This unique and fun project was located in Austin, Texas on Red Bud Dr. The architect was Jay Hargrave of Cottam/Hargrave. The beautiful, ultra modern, concrete, steel and glass residence will be published in Architectural Digest or the likes.
